Wood...

I finally figured out wood, more or less.  This works for me - scorched brown base and a badab black wash.  Looks like there are shadows in the grain.  Makes it rather dark, but that's fine.  I'll post a pic when I can and you can judge.

    Did you try a dry brush of something lite like snakebite leather, desert yellow or even bleached bone after the wash?
    As a rule 3 layers of color look 'right'.
    In the old days you would have used a base of brown with black, then a heavy dry brush of brown, then lite drybrush of brown with white. But the new wash over 2 colors on a dark base is good enough. When your family gets over your plague we really should get together to paint.
